Why The Genius Network Was Created (from the mind of Joe Polish)
Who could have guessed that a few good relationships, a bit of ingenuity, and the desire to connect others could all turn into this…
The concept for this group began when Robin Robins, the top trainer in the world for people in the IT industry, had hired me to do consulting many years ago.
At the time, I was charging $3,000 an hour in minimum lots of 2 hours. She had hired me for $6,000 to consult with her because she was using one of my programs, The Better Your Best Contest Model successfully in the IT industry.
At the end of our consultation, Robin asked me, “Why don’t you start a Platinum Plus group for your favorite clients?”
I said, “Well, I’ve thought about it, but, like anything else, you have to organize it, market it, deliver it and put it together. BUT, if I was to do something like that, what would you recommend I charge?”
She said, “I just paid you $6,000 for 2 hours and I got a ton of value out of that. I would easily pay $25,000 a year in a New York second.”
I repeated back to her, “So, you would pay $25,000 a year to join a group like this if I started it?”
She said, “Of course I would (and refer a bunch of friends)”
At this point, I had always brought together high level people to meet at my office, and I loved doing it. People would get so much value out of the meetings. But I never had any formal, organized way of turning it into a business or structure.
So, I called up a bunch of people I would usually invite to the meetings and asked them, “If I created a more organized group around this meeting, and I charged $25,000 a year – Would you join?”
A whole lot of them said yes…
I called up Robin Robins and said, “We’re going to do this thing!”
She overnighted me a check for $25,000, and the rest is history.
This was all back in 2006 when we got started. I was only going to have 25 people in the group at $25,000 each.
I came up with the term “Genius Network”, because of the network of geniuses we were about to assemble; People with the skills, capabilities, methods and processes it takes to go REALLY Big in their industries.
All of this started out as a very informal get together. Now, it’s become a whole “thing” with a life of its own… and year after year, it remains one of my favorite endeavors.
