Show Notes

  • BJ Fogg has a Phd is psychology, teaches at Stanford and his courses are constantly in demand and oversubscribed.
  • Help people do what they already want to do. If you don’t do that, your product or service will fail.
  • You can persuade people to do something but that won’t work in the long term.
  • It’s take an enormous amount of persuasion to get people to do what they want to do, let alone what they don’t want to do.
  • People may want to reduce their stress, they just may not want to use your app.
  • You have to boil your product down to a set of behaviours.
  • Everyday people are really bad at taking an abstraction and putting it into practice. The problems with experts is they have forgotten what it’s like not to know.
  • Any behaviour happens when motivation, ability, and a prompt come together. Helping people means increasing their ability.
  • Help people feel successful, if they do they will continue with your product or service, if they don’t they won’t.
  • As people do a behaviour and they feel successful, they begin to think about themselves differently. You are transforming their life in ways that your product may not even address.
  • When people do something and have positive emotion around it, the odds of doing it again go up.
  • Part of the key to changing your own life is to find behaviours that you like to do. Experiment with behaviours that you can turn into habits and stop if you don’t enjoy something.
  • Progression is the sensation of success.
  • Make it very, very easy to take the first step with your product or service. The first step should propel them forward.
  • If you don’t get the first step right, you lose.
  • Changing behaviour, yours and others, is easier than you might think if you do it in the right way.
